I made a STEP BY STEP guide but it got lost pages back. I am updating it and copy pasting to help those who might have missed it.
4.2.1 AND YOU
GENERAL INFO
============
*iPhones: You should always keep in mind which iOS is Jailbreakable and which basebands are unlockable. Jailbreak, in short, means having Cydia on your iDevice and unlock means you can use your iPhone on any carrier.
*iPad: You only need to keep in mind which iOS is Jailbreakable as iPads are factory unlocked.
*Tethered: this means your device needs a PC or MAC to be turned on with so that everything works 100% If your device requires a tethered boot up and you don't use a PC or MAC, then you might hit home screen but Cydia wont work, or you might get stuck on the apple logo.
*SHSH: These are "backups" made and sent to Cydia servers to trick iTunes into letting you downgrade iOS. Download software called "Tiny Umbrella" and hook your device to the PC... click SAVE SHSH blobs and you will see which versions Cydia has for your device (you can downgrade to any of those iOS versions if you want BUT THIS WILL NOT DOWNGRADE YOUR BASEBAND SO IF YOUR BASEBAND IS CURRENTLY UNLOCKABLE YOU WONT BE ABLE TO USE IT WITH ANOTHER CARRIER THAN THAT LINKED TO YOUR iPhone)
*ISPW: These are the files you download online that upgrades (or downgrades if allowed) your iDevices. You open iTunes and click SHIFT-RESTORE to browse for these ISPW files so update begins.
*DFU: This is a special "Recovery Mode" where your device is ready for a restore but the screen is off. Search google or YouTube for a tutorial/video. A good way of knowing you are on DFU mode is when you hear the USB connected sound while the screen on your iDevice is off.
iPhone 3GS
=========
*Unlock for baseband 05.14 will come Sunday (05.14 is 3GS iOS 4.1 baseband, 4.2.1 has another baseband and no ETA for unlock on that exists so STAY ON 4.1)
*If you DONT need an unlock, you can update to 4.2.1 and Jailbreak your device.
*4.2.1 Jailbreak is Tethered for newer models and untethered for older models.
iPhone 4
=======
*Unlock for baseband 02.10 is still in the works and WILL NOT COME SUNDAY (02.10 is iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 baseband, 4.2.1 has another baseband and no ETA for unlock on that exists so STAY ON 4.1)
*If you DONT need an unlock, you can update to 4.2.1 and Jailbreak your device.
*4.2.1 Jailbreak is Tethered for all iPhone 4's.
iPad
====
*Your device is not a Phone so you dont have to worry about an "unlock"
*4.2.1 Jailbreak is Tethered for all iPads.
TO JAILBREAK YOUR 4.2.1 iDevice

1) Save SHSH using Tiny Umbrella
2) Download and install iTunes latest version 10.1 and REBOOT your PC (very important).
3) Download and install 4.2.1 .ISPW using SHIFT-RESTORE on iTunes (You need the .ISPW to run Redsn0w later so download it)
4) Run Redsn0w, load the 4.2.1 ISPW, select Install Cydia, click NEXT and follow instructions, wait for iPad to reboot. Once you hit home screen again, you will see a Cydia grayed icon and if you try to hit it, it wont go in.
5) Run Redsn0w again, load the 4.2.1 ISPW, select "Just boot Tethered right now" follow Redsn0w instructions.
Thats it, once you hit HOME screen, you will see the Cydia logo and this time it will work.
NOTE: Steps 4 and 5 require you to put your device in DFU mode. Redsn0w will teach you how to do it, but it might save you trouble if you put your device in DFU mode before opening Redsn0w.
NOTE: Steps 4 and 5 require you to run Redsn0w, depending on your Computer, you might need to run it as Admin or as Compatibility mode for XP SP3 if running Redsn0w shows errors.
Anytime you turn off or reboot your device, you will have to run Redsn0w like in step 5 again. If you turn your iPad on without doing what I wrote on step 4, your iPad MIGHT boot (depending on the tweaks you've downloaded off Cydia), but Cydia wont work.

NOTE: As it is every time a new Jailbreak for a new iOS is released, Cydia servers are hammered by everyone trying to download things. Please dont come here posting "I got an error on cydia when trying to install x" because chances are servers are slow and that is why you are having issues. Be patient.

@.david: Habe die entscheidenden Informationen zum Unlock noch einmal hervorgehoben, denn in den letzten Beiträge wurde nach Neuigkeiten zum Unlock gefragt. Da ich den Beitrag allerdings im gesamten interessant fand, wollte ich ihn anderen Lesern nicht vorenthalten und habe ihn daher komplett veröffentlicht. Hier noch einmal die
Bestätigung der Veröffentlichung des Unlocks am Sonntag von "offizieller" Seite.
