Yubico-Key und iPad Pro

Hi zusammen,
ich überlege, sowohl die Apple ID als auch die Strongbox-Datenbax mit einem Security-Key (zB Yubico) zu schützen. Nun hat das iPad Pro ja kein NFC und Security-Keys funktionieren am iPad Pro mit USB C nicht.

Im Falle der Apple ID heisst das, ich kann vom iPad aus nicht mehr darauf zugreifen. Das kann ich ja umgehen und Änderungen ggf. am Mac oder iPhone machen

Für die Passwort-Datenbank ist das Security-Key Feature allerdings nutzlos, wenn ein iPad Pro verwendet werden soll.

Oder habe ich etwas übersehen?

Also ich habe meine Apple-ID mit einem YubiKey 5C NFC und einem Security Key C NFC abgesichert und kann diese auch an meinem iPad Pro mit USB-C nutzen Um mich z.B. an meiner iCloud im Browser anzumelden.

Aktuell kann ich es nur mit der Beta von iPadOS 17 testen, da ich kein weiteres USB-C iPad mit iPadOS 16 zur Verfügung habe, aber ich meine, das es auch schon mit iPadOS 16 funktioniert hat.

Zu Einschränkungen bei anderen Diensten kann ich nichts sagen, da ich die Keys im Apple Ökosystem nur für meine Apple-ID nutze.

Edit: An meinem O365 Account kann ich mich mit dem Key auch mit dem iPad Pro und USB-C anmelden. Das habe ich definitiv schon mit iPadOS 16.4 oder 16.5 getestet.

Do YubiKeys work with iPad Pros (with USB-C)?

When connecting a YubiKey to your iPad Pro over USB-C, the functions that will work are button-press functions like Yubico OTP and WebAuthn (which generally encompasses FIDO U2F and FIDO2).

*Please note that in version 1.7.0 of the Yubico Authenticator USB-C support was added to iPads running iPadOS 16.1
If you have an iPad Pro, please note that our YubiKeys are not compatible with the Yubico Authenticator app (OATH security protocol) because the iPad Pro does not have lightning or NFC capabilities. This is due to Apple's restrictions on what is able to communicate with iPadOS over USB-C, combined with the fact that Apple's MFi program (which we were able to use to enable this kind of communication over the lightning connector) does not apply to the USB-C connector.

In summary: You should be able to use your key with any services that use Yubico OTP on an iPad over USB-C. For services that use WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, and FIDO2, the capability is there in iPadOS if you use the Safari browser (this leverages iPadOS' native support for WebAuthn), but note that some services may simply not give you the option to use a YubiKey if they detect you are logging in from an iPad. This is outside of our control.

For services that support our products via authenticator apps, you should still be able to use Yubico Authenticator with a YubiKey to generate the one-time passwords, but you will not be able to do this on your iPad. You will however be able to generate the OTPs on another device, and then hand-copy them onto your iPad.

Das es nur mitbestimmten Protokollen geht und das liegt an Apple. OK, dann wird es mit der iCloud wohl funktionieren, aber mit Strongbox nicht. Ich hatte gehofft, es gibt einen Workaround oder ein Toole, das es doch ermöglicht.

Nachtrag: Ich habe es gerade mit einem iCloud-Testaccount ausprobiert. Hier funktioniert es mit mit dem YubiKey 5C NFC am iPad Pro 12,9 iPad-OS 16.5 mit USB-C. Mit Strongbox nicht.
