[10.13 High Sierra] RAM SWAP funktioniert nicht.

Hallo zusammen,

ich nutze einen iMac Late 2012 mit High Sierra. Bei sehr Speicherintensiven Anwendungen stürzt der gesamte Rechner ab und friert komplett ein. Ich habe mal die Aktivitätsanzeige kontrolliert. Selbst wenn der RAM fast 99% ausgelastet ist bleibt der Swap bei 0 Byte. Und bevor der Swap irgendwie greifen kann, friert alles ein weil kein Speicher mehr frei ist.

Das ist doch nicht normal? Weiß jemand einen Rat?

Nein, die Systemplatte hat 99 Gigabyte frei. Das ist die interne SSD. Mein System liegt aber auf einer externen SSD mit 256GB.

Hast Du vielleicht mal einen Artikel zu Swapfiles auf SSDs gelesen und es hierüber:
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/24502/why-would-i-disable-swap-file-in-mac-os-x "deaktiviert"? Oder ein "Optimierungstool" auf Deinen Mac losgelassen?

Damit sollte er angehen (wenn es das ist):

Bewusst deaktiviert habe ich nie was. Unter El Capitan war das auch nicht so. Fällt mir jetzt erst seit High Sierra auf.

Ich habe den Befehl eingegeben, aber als Antwort kam nur
"/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist: service already loaded"

Also läuft er wohl schon. Optimierungstools habe ich keine genutzt.

Kann man sowohl mit "diskutil apfs list" als auch mit dem Festplattendienstprogramm unter dem Namen "VM" sehen.

Aber was ich oben geschrieben habe, war leider etwas irreführend, sorry. Auch wenn macOS inzwischen ein Swap-Volume nutzt, wird das nicht "roh" beschrieben wie in einigen anderen Unix-Systemen. Das Konzept der Swapfiles wird auch weiterhin verwendet, so dass der Befehl von @ottomane schon richtig war.

Korrekt ist: /var/vm, bzw. /private/var/vm wird vom Volume VM gemountet. Dort wird im Normalbetrieb nur das Hibernation Image im Voraus angelegt. Die Swapfiles werden nicht mehr präallokiert, sondern nur noch bei Bedarf auf das Volume geschrieben. Seit 10.9 verfolgt das System die Strategie, den Auslagerungsspeicher zunächst als komprimierten Speicher im RAM zu halten. Erst wenn ein bestimmtes Maß überschritten wird, wird tatsächlich auf VM-Dateien ausgelagert.

Jetzt sehe ich aber, dass bei mir das Volume "VM" nicht mit FileVault verschlüsselt ist, lediglich Macintosh HD ist verschlüsselt. Richtig so? Soll das so sein?

Der virtuelle Speicher ist in macOS immer verschlüsselt, unabhängig vom Filesystem.

Danke für den Tipp. Ich bin weiter gekommen. Ich habe das Virtual Memory Volume gefunden, aber ich kann es nicht mounten. Hier der Auszug aus meinem Terminal. Wird da jemand schlau?

hast Du nach dem ersten Schritt
sudo diskutil mount -mountPoint /private/var/vm disk8s3
wo Du Dich vertippt hast, das Laufwerk geunmounted?
Einfach rebooten und noch mal neu ohne Vertipper mit dem richtigen Laufwerk für VM ausführen.

Ich muss vermutlich nach jedem Neustart den Befehl neu ausführen. Kann man Terminalbefehle in den Autostart packen oder ein Apple Script schreiben, welches das automatisch erledigt?

Das Swap-Volume wird automatisch beim Systemstart gemountet. Falls das nicht passiert, muss am Betriebssystem ziemlich was verstellt worden sein. Da sollte man eher herausfinden, was da nicht stimmt.

Die hohen Zahlen in "disk7" und "disk8" lassen aber gleichzeitig vermuten, dass Du eventuell mehrere Betriebssysteme mit unterschiedlichen Swap-Volumes installiert hast. Kann das sein? Oder wurde die Beobachtung mit dem nicht gemounteten VM von einem Recovery-System aus gemacht?
